Is it possible to turn off images pop-up windows?

of course. Go through templates/pages_default.tpl and templates/products_default.tpl and search for rel="lightbox
then remove the whole property rel="..."
There are several instances of it in the files.

And let us know how it worked so it is useful to others too.
