choosing different templates from selection list

I'v created new template: pages_default1.tpl
and i wish to have a choose if category(site) would be shown as pages_default.tpl or pages_default1.tpl
What should i do to choose it form selection list ?

First thing that jumped into my head: the selector would be some kind of form that when submitted, it would change a session variable, which then would cause pages to be displayed with one or another template. NOT EASY.

But perhaps I am overcomplicating this and it can be done some easier way.
