Coupons and Discounts

Is there an easy way to add a coupoon or discount to some products in the cart for a limited period of time? Or to offer coupon codes to past costumers? This seems like it should be a simple task that the admin can do himself without getting into the nitty gritty of the code.

Ok...if that is not possible, is there a way for me to edit some of the code to allow for a "coupon code" field in the shopping cart checkout?
