How many products and categories can I add?
Is there a limit?

actually, there is no limit. I work with 4000+ products in about 600 categories with 4000 pics. Works ok, but we had to increase memory limit on the server to 64 MB per application to acommodate for increased number of products. Slowdown is still bearable too. You get very specific errors when there is not much memory. Also a specific form option in admin settings has to be switched off so that page form doesn't take minutes to load.

I would say 8000 products would slow down server too much. I recommend a MySQL solution or try a very specific use of the quick cart languages feature:
Quick Cart allows you to create different 'sections' of one big webshop. You can basically have two webshops in one. My brother used this when his old db was too big. He split webshop into "games" section (one 'language') and "hardware" section (another 'language'). The result is a very nice website, tigerware.sk (link intentionally not included). You can check it out yourself, the top-most menu switches between various webshops and on the far left there is 'hardware' and on the far right there is 'games' link. These both are in one installation of QC, so all orders are on one place. This is superb for those users that have server memory problems (too many categories/products/files in one language).

I also write about it here: http://opensolution.org/Quick.Cart/forum/?p=readTopic&nr=5887

BTW, I do recommend Quick.Cart 3.x, because 2.x could have a serious bug that could after some time corrupt your orders database. The more products, the worse it could get.

3.x has a different behavior in the key areas and functions correctly.

I really like 2.x and how my webshop look.
If I upgrade to 3.x would it cause much trouble to make it look just about the same?
I have read about the bug in my orders database, and I check that out now and then.

It mostly depends on how you current webshop looks.
You should have some skill in CSS and HTML, but it should not be very difficult. In the worst possible case, hire someone to do it.

What I mean is, do I have to make all the changes in the css-files again? Or if I upgrade, will those changes be the same?

I have made all the changes to my webshop myself so I think have some skills in both HTML and CSS.

I read in some other thread about how to upgrade from 2.x to 3.x but I'm not sure I understood it.

I currently have 250+ products and I don't know how many categories and I feel it is a huge task to copy it all by hand.

This upgrade needs to be done on one night...

you were talking about 'look' - I automatically understood visual design (HTML+CSS).

Considering products+pages upgrade only, it can be done over 1 night with no problem, but you need someone skilled to debug your webshop. One of my clients tried to upgrade from 2.x to 3.x with some problems, I helped him to straighten out the problems.

You only leave the orders behind, every page and product are quite easily convertible.

When you say "you only leave the orders behind" - do you mean that I'll loose all the old orders? Or will those be visible in the upgraded version?

you leave your orders in your old version. if it's installed in some secret place, you can always log in and go through your orders.

Installing a new version is a welcome opportunity to clean up your database, so the system is quick and nimble again.

I do not recommend transfering old orders into new version.
