Adding a SOLD (button, field, whatever) to product

I have been working on this for about 2 days now. I am very new to this program and to php. I read some of the posts and was able to get a new field to appear in my admin add product data, but I could not get it to show up on a page and apparantly not save in the database since when I returned to the product data page the word SOLD did not appear in the cell.
I think some of the problem with the info I found here about this kind of adding is that it was in older versions. I am using the latese v2.2 english.
This is my bottom line. I want a simple (and I know simple is a relative term with all the work I have been doing in the past 2 days) buttom or text to appear just above the short (and long if possible) description once an item is sold. This would be a manual thing where once the item is sold, I would go into the admin and to that products data and either select a drop down menu to display the text SOLD (in red) or type SOlD into a field that then would appear in the page just above the description. When I said simple, I meant that it is not an automatic thing, just an on or off thing so I can show that it is sold.
Why don't I just make it invisible or take it off the site. These are clearance items and I want visitors to have an idea of what kinds of things they will find here.
If you want to see what I have done with this great program so far, go to http://www.adairof.net/clearance/ That is the QuickCart part and if you click on the home button on the top menu, you will see the mother site that is just plain HTML.
I think I did a pretty good job of integrating the two since I just started on php a week ago.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'll donate for this if needed. Thank you in advance!
