fopen write problems

Hi, I am a newbie to this script, I have installed and the admin seems to work fine but I can't edit the configurations page: this is the error message I get:
Warning: fopen(config/general.php) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied

Please can anyone help?

give chmod 777 to config/general.php file and all files in config/ directory
