when people click on an item which takes them to the add to cart page I'd like to do the following

Add lampshade
offer them the choice to team it with a lamp stand from within the same cart
any ideas on how to do this

so cart would be lampshade $45
Add stand $30

and the cart would automatically add up the item etc

You could use the opensolution plugin for related products:

Or you could add the info onto the products more info page by hand - but this would take more time and effort
