eliminate left column on "product details" page

As I'm trying to restrict the total width of the containers (from 960 to 720px) when I go to the "product details" or the "cart" pages the left menu is overlapping. I just need to remove the left menu in those subpages. How can I do that?
One more problem: the "continue shopping" button doesn't take me back to the product list. How do I corerct this?

I have partly solved the problem by reducing 650px t0 520px in:
/* PRODUCTS DETAILS */ #product{float:right;display:block;width:520px;margin:0 20px;text-align:left;}

but I still would prefer to remove the left colum on these subpages. How?
