Is it possible to add external links to a menu? If so, how? I suppose I can do it in the template, but that is somewhat lame.

Deformative - as I understand you properly, you want to have link in menu and this link after clicking will redirect you to some other page... if it is what you want, just use field Address from right panel while adding/editing page. If you want something else, describe it more clearly.
